The conversion, without the folklore
BTU/h is a US cooling unit. Kilowatts are what UK quotes use. Divide BTU/h by 3412 to get kW, or remember the round numbers: 9,000 BTU is about 2.6 kW, 12,000 BTU is about 3.5 kW, 18,000 BTU is about 5.3 kW. The BTU to kW guide covers the wider table.
Mini-split in US English is a split system. The product is the same family as a UK wall-mounted heat pump. The electrical supply, planning, and F-gas paperwork are not. Do not order a 115 V US unit for a British house.

What a 9,000 BTU job looks like here
A bedroom, a small through-lounge that is actually a box, a home office. Outdoor unit on a suitable wall, indoor high on an internal wall, condensate out. Installed cost follows UK labour, not a US big-box kit price.

Do not scale BTU like paint
Rules of thumb, BTU per square foot, come from US construction. UK rooms have different insulation, glazing and infiltration. A 12 m2 Victorian bedroom with a bay is not a 12 m2 Texas bedroom. Use kW and a visit.
If two US sites disagree on 9,000 versus 12,000 for your square metres, that is the rule of thumb failing. It is not a reason to average them. Commercial 9,000 BTU cassettes exist. They still need void depth and condensate.
