A 2.5 kW air conditioner is the usual UK bedroom and small-office size, roughly 9,000 BTU/h. It suits enclosed rooms with modest glass. It is too small for most living rooms, loft conversions with roof windows, and any kitchen-diner. Confirm with a survey, not a shopping filter.
Where 2.5 kW belongs
Single bedrooms, box rooms used as offices, and small hotel-style rooms are the natural 2.5 kW market. The US equivalent search is 9,000 BTU. That is about 2.6 kW. UK installers will still write 2.5 kW on the quote.
Roof windows, west-facing glass, and rooms that open into a stairwell add load. A small bedroom with a huge velux behaves like a larger room. Loft conversions often need 3.5 kW or a fabric conversation first. Quiet sleep matters more than brochure kW. Indoor sound data and outdoor siting next to a neighbour's bedroom should be in the survey notes.

2.5 kW still needs F-gas, a proper condensate, and a legal outdoor position. It is not a plug-in. Pipe length limits still apply. A long run to a distant garden can make a small indoor unit a poor choice if the outdoor has to sit 20 m away.
2026 installed illustrations remain a four-figure single-split job even at 2.5 kW, because labour, electrics and access dominate the indoor-unit cost. Multi-split: a 2.5 kW bedroom head on a shared outdoor is common. Diversity and simultaneous use, all bedrooms on a hot night, must be in the outdoor sizing.
When to step up
If the room is also a day office with computers, if it has a conservatory-style window wall, or if you want serious heating in winter. Heating capacity at low outdoor temperatures can undershoot the cooling nameplate.
Nurseries and rooms for people who cannot sleep in heat: size honestly. An undersized 2.5 kW that never reaches setpoint is noisier than a correctly sized 3.5 kW that cycles. Do not put 2.5 kW in a gym, kitchen or shop because it is cheap. It will run at maximum and still lose.
