Can homeowners install split air conditioning themselves?

A homeowner should not treat a fixed split air conditioner as a DIY appliance. Connecting, commissioning, maintaining or recovering refrigerant from equipment containing regulated F-gases requires the relevant individual qualification, and businesses carrying out specified work on stationary equipment generally need company certification. Electrical work, structural fixings, drainage, planning and manufacturer conditions also require suitable competence. Homeowners can prepare questions and clear access, but should leave the technical installation and commissioning to appropriately qualified people.

Why a split system is not plug and play

A split system has a sealed refrigeration circuit spanning indoor and outdoor equipment. Correct work can involve pipe preparation, pressure testing, evacuation, leak checks, refrigerant handling and commissioning. Mistakes can release refrigerant, admit moisture, damage the compressor or leave poor performance that is not immediately obvious.

Condensate has to reach a suitable discharge without leaking, freezing, staining walls or causing nuisance. A poor fall or untested pump can produce concealed water damage even when the cooling function appears normal.

What a homeowner can safely contribute

Document which rooms overheat, arrange access, locate property information and gather lease or planning constraints. Agree positions, finishes and controls before installation rather than carrying out part of the technical work.

After handover, occupants can usually clean accessible filters and keep outdoor airflow clear as instructed. They should not remove covers protecting electrical or refrigerant components. Faults, leaks and refrigerant work need competent investigation.
