A reverse-cycle split can heat the rooms it is fitted in, which is the useful comparison with storage heaters. It heats while it runs, room by room, instead of charging bricks overnight. It does not heat a cylinder of hot water. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme is not for a cooling-led install. If the real aim is whole-home heating and a grant, that is a different design from a summer bedroom unit. F-gas rules apply, and outdoor siting in England needs the Planning Portal conditions read first.
Heat while it runs, in the rooms that have a unit
Storage heaters store heat in bricks on an off-peak tariff and release it later, often with poor control by evening. A split moves heat into the room when you ask, and stops when the setpoint is met. Energy Saving Trust describes these reversible units as air-to-air heat pumps. One indoor unit heats the room it sits in, not the closed rooms beyond.
Several rooms mean several indoors, or a multi-split, each sized after a survey. A single wall unit in the lounge leaves the bedrooms on whatever heaters remain. A split can heat the rooms where you install indoor units. Keep the existing heaters until the rooms you care about are actually covered. You do not have to rip out every storage heater first.
Taps, a brochure SCOP, and a cooling-led grant claim
Storage heaters never made hot water either. People sometimes hope the new heat pump will. An air-to-air split will not. Showers and taps still need an immersion, a cylinder, or a heat pump that is built to heat water. Say that in plain words so nobody prices a bedroom unit as a full heating replacement.
Running cost depends on the tariff you leave behind, how many hours you heat, and the seasonal figure for that model pair. A brochure SCOP is a comparison tool. It is not a bill for your house.
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme can apply to some residential air-to-air heat pumps when the scheme rules are met, including a system that covers the home's space heating, with an installer who can apply. A job whose purpose is summer cooling, with storage heaters left in place, is not that scheme. Do not let a quote assume a grant for a cooling-led install. F-gas certification is the refrigerant qualification. It is not, by itself, the certification a grant application needs. Outdoor noise and position still follow the Planning Portal in England.
