Air conditioning can use electricity your solar panels are producing in the middle of the day. A split still needs a proper circuit from the consumer unit, sized for that outdoor unit. It does not run for free at night. After dark the panels are not generating, so the unit draws from the grid, or from a home battery only if you have one and it still has charge. The battery is a separate system with a finite store.
Midday generation beside a running split
On a bright afternoon the inverter may be exporting, or covering the house load, at the same time the split is cooling a hot room. That overlap is the useful case. The cooling kilowatts on the brochure are not the electrical kilowatts the meter sees. Ask the installer for the input power of the model they are quoting, then compare it with what your array typically produces at that hour.
When the array only covers part of the load
A small array on a cloudy day, or a roof that faces away from the afternoon sun, may cover only part of the load. The rest still comes from the grid and appears on the bill at your unit rate.
A fixed circuit from the consumer unit
The outdoor unit connects to the consumer unit the way the manufacturer and a competent electrician specify. A dedicated circuit and a local isolator are the usual domestic pattern. Plugging into a spare socket, or assuming the solar consumer unit can absorb the load because the panels are there, is how trips and warranty arguments start.

Inverter equipment is not the air conditioner
The solar inverter and the air conditioner are different pieces of equipment. Fitting one does not commission the other. Refrigerant work remains an F-gas job for a certified company.

Many UK homes want cooling after work, when west-facing glass is still hot and the array has dropped away. That is grid electricity unless a battery is carrying it. Energy Saving Trust describes reversible splits as air-to-air heat pumps, so the same point applies in heating mode on a dark winter morning.
Short-cycling on an oversized solar-backed split
Size the room first. An oversized unit short-cycles and still needs the same proper supply. Outdoor siting still has to satisfy the Planning Portal conditions for a heat pump. A battery has a limited store. It is not an endless night supply.
