Air Conditioning Filter Light On in the UK

A UK filter lamp is usually a run-time reminder, not a sensor that has weighed the dust. Clean the filters, then reset only as that manual describes.

The filter light on a UK split is almost always a timer. It comes on after a set number of hours, whether the mesh is filthy or was washed yesterday. It does not mean the unit has measured the dust. Wash and dry the filters properly, then clear the reminder using the steps in that model's manual. Button sequences are not universal, so this guide will not invent one. If the light returns immediately, the unit will not run, or a different lamp is flashing, stop. Call an F-gas engineer rather than resetting all week. The gas circuit stays closed.

Engineer cleaning filters during an air conditioning service visit

An hours counter, not a dust weighing

Manufacturers choose a service interval in hours because they cannot see your pets, your pollen, or your plaster dust. A cottage that ran hard through a heatwave will light the lamp on schedule. A unit that sat idle may light later. Either way the correct response is to look at the filters, not to argue with the LED. Some displays use the same lamp area for faults. If the manual's filter symbol does not match what you see, or a second light is flashing, treat it as an unknown pattern. Photograph it. Do not clear codes at random. HSE ventilation guidance is a reason to take a choked mesh seriously even though the lamp itself is only a timer. The unit can usually still cool with the reminder showing. Check the manual before you assume it has locked itself out. If the manual says the unit will stop, follow that, wash the filters, and reset correctly.

If the light came on the day after a service, ask the engineer. Sometimes the reminder is cleared and a different lamp is on. Photograph it. Do not assume a gas fault. Washable meshes are washed, not thrown away, unless they are torn. Replace like for like if they are damaged. Do not run without them while you wait for parts. Energy Saving Trust's air-to-air page is about the heat pump, not a filter icon. If you want an annual service rather than a reset demonstration, say that.

Wash, dry, then the reset printed for that model

Switch the unit off. Remove the meshes the manual shows. Wash, dry, refit. A reset with dirty filters still inside teaches you nothing and the lamp will be back. Then follow the reset printed for that indoor model, often a small recessed button or a remote key held for a stated time. Do not hold random keys because a video for another brand did. Do not pull the lamp connector out. If you cannot find the reset, leave the light on and book a service.

If airflow is weak even after a wash, if the light returns the same day, or if mould and a musty smell are the reason the lamp feels justified, book an F-gas engineer for a service. GOV.UK certification is the standard if that visit has to go beyond the mesh. The mesh is cleanable by you. The coil and drain are not a cotton-bud job. Do not ignore a filter light for a year and also skip the engineer visit. The reminder is crude, but a coil full of dust is how UK units start to ice and smell. Nobody needs to open the refrigerant circuit to clear a lamp. Say the lamp name and whether you washed the mesh.
