A split air conditioner does not need an MCS logo on the van merely because it cools a bedroom. The company that opens the refrigerant circuit needs F-gas certification. MCS turns up in two other places people mix together: the MCS 020a planning standards that Class G permitted development in England now requires for air source heat pumps, and MCS certification of an installer, which heating grant schemes look for. Do not describe a cooling-led air conditioner as something the Boiler Upgrade Scheme pays for. Survey first, then ask which badges the job actually needs.
Three badges that people fold into one sentence
F-gas certification is about fluorinated greenhouse gases. GOV.UK sets out company certification for that work. It is the everyday legal requirement for installing and maintaining the refrigerant circuit on a split. A firm can hold it and never have touched a grant form.
MCS installer certification is a quality and grant framework for microgeneration, including heat pumps that are being installed as heating. The MCS site is where that credential lives. The MCS 020a planning standard is a noise and siting method. Meeting a planning calculation is not the same sentence as this company being MCS certified for a grant. Legislation.gov.uk carries Class G, which is the permitted-development route that points at that planning standard.
Permitted development, then a heating grant that is a different question
If you want to rely on permitted development in England, the Planning Portal says the installation must comply with MCS 020a, alongside volume limits, highway rules and the condition that the unit is not used solely for cooling. From 28 May 2026 that planning standard is the one the Portal names. Flats often still need an application because of those other limits, the lease, or both. If you are applying for planning permission instead, the council's conditions are the test. You still do not skip F-gas. You also should not invent a metre rule or assume MCS paperwork is a substitute for the freeholder.
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme is aimed at eligible heating systems that replace fossil-fuel or other qualifying heat, under scheme rules, with an installer who meets those rules. A single room cooler that leaves the boiler in charge of the house is not that project. Do not let a quote describe cooling-led air conditioning as grant-funded. If you genuinely intend air-to-air to heat the whole home, that is a different design and a different eligibility conversation, read from the scheme rules rather than from an air conditioning advert. This page will not tell you that you qualify. Ask to see F-gas certification for the refrigerant work. If they say the job is permitted development, ask how MCS 020a is being met and for the outdoor position that calculation assumes. If they mention a grant, ask them to show the scheme rule that fits a cooling-led quote. Most honest firms will drop the grant sentence at that point. Say whether you need summer comfort, whole-home heating, or both.
