In Britain a mini split is a split air conditioner or air-to-air heat pump: an outdoor condenser, one or more indoor units, and refrigerant pipes, with no ducts around the house. Buy it as UK 230 V equipment and have an F-gas certified company install it. The name does not mean a window box, a portable with a hose, or one head that cools every closed room.
A bedroom listing that says mini split
Someone shopping for a hot terrace bedroom lands on an American page that says mini split or ductless. The UK quote for the same family of machine says wall-mounted split, multi-split, or air-to-air heat pump. The indoor fan coil hangs on the wall, the outdoor unit rejects heat to the garden or a side wall, and the two are joined by insulated copper and a drain. Energy Saving Trust describes the reversible versions as air-to-air heat pumps because they heat as well as cool.
One room, or several indoors on one outdoor unit
A single mini split serves one room properly. A multi-split uses one outdoor unit and several indoors, each with its own control. Whole-house comfort still means enough indoor units for the rooms you close at night. A hallway head does not cool a shut bedroom.
Most households want one quiet indoor in a bedroom or living room, heating for cool evenings, and an outdoor unit that will not annoy the next house. That is a mainstream Daikin, Mitsubishi Electric, Panasonic, Toshiba, LG or Samsung wall pair, sized in kW after a visit. The fascia style is a second decision.
What the British install still includes
The American name does not change the supply, the refrigerant rules, or the hole in the wall. Treat the listing as a split, then check the points that decide whether it can be commissioned here.
- UK homes are 230 V, 50 Hz. Leave 115 V kits alone.
- The refrigerant circuit is F-gas work, not a weekend DIY job.
- No ducts still means a wall hole, trunking, a drain and electrics.
- Planning and neighbour noise apply to the outdoor unit.
Wall, floor console, cassette or concealed ducted
Wall indoors suit most rooms. A floor console suits a low wall under a window. A cassette needs a ceiling void. Those are all ductless splits. Ducted systems hide the indoor in a cupboard or loft and blow through grilles. People sometimes call those ducted mini splits, which muddies the word. If you want grilles rather than a wall unit, say concealed ducted.
Cooling-only splits still exist, mostly in commercial work. For a home, ask for a reverse-cycle unit so the same indoor heats. The outdoor position, pipe length and condensate route change the price more than the word mini. Name the rooms, say you want cooling and heating, and send photos of the indoor wall and the outdoor elevation. Ask for cooling kW, the indoor and outdoor model codes, pipe length and how condensate leaves. If you read a BTU figure online, pass it on as a clue and let the survey replace it.
Stop at a hose kit or a head for every closed room
If the listing shows pre-charged hoses and a claim that anyone can connect them, it is the wrong buying path for a British house. UK practice is a surveyed install: vacuum, charge, electrical supply and a warranty registered by the installer. The name does not mean a window box, a portable with a hose, or one indoor that cools every shut room.
In England, check the Planning Portal conditions for air source heat pumps before you assume the outdoor unit is permitted development. Flats, listed buildings and some walls need a different consent path, plus the freeholder where there is a lease.
