An MXZ is the outdoor unit on a Mitsubishi Electric multi-split: one condenser, several indoor units, each room controlled on its own. The model code sets how many indoors, the total capacity and the pipe limits. Indoors are chosen from the compatible list, often including MSZ wall units. A quote that only says MXZ, without the outdoor model and the indoor codes, is not ready to compare. The outdoor position is the planning and noise decision.
Ports, diversity and the indoors on the chart
People shop for wall fascias and forget that the MXZ has to feed them. Each outdoor model has a maximum number of ports, a capacity range, and limits on total pipe length and height difference. Two 3.5 kW indoors do not automatically mean a 7 kW outdoor is correct. Mitsubishi allows a diversity factor because rooms rarely peak together, and the datasheet shows the allowed combination. Get the full MXZ model code, not the family name alone. List every indoor model and its kW. Ask for total pipe length and the longest leg against the limit.
If every room must run flat out on the same August afternoon, say so. A glass living room and a loft bedroom can peak together. The installer should show that the outdoor can cover that coincidence, not only the sum written in a brochure example. Compatible M Series wall units, and some other Mitsubishi indoors, can share an MXZ when the combination chart says so. MSZ-HR, MSZ-AY and other current walls are typical. You cannot hang a Daikin indoor on an MXZ. You should not assume an older indoor from a previous system is compatible with a new outdoor. Put the quieter, better-specified indoor in the main bedroom and a simpler indoor in a spare room if you want to spend the money where you sleep. The outdoor does not care about the fascia. It cares about capacity and refrigerant control.
One noise source, one supply, one refrigerant system
One MXZ replaces several outdoor units, which is why terraces and flats with one lawful wall like them. One outdoor unit means one noise source to site well. The chassis is larger than a single-room outdoor unit. Airflow clearances, condensate from the outdoors, and anti-vibration mounts matter more. In England, check Planning Portal conditions. A larger unit can fail a boundary or noise condition that a tiny one might meet.
The electrical supply is sized to the outdoor unit. F-gas certification covers the whole refrigerant system. If the installed system's effective rated output is over 12 kW, check GOV.UK air conditioning inspection guidance. Many three-room houses stay under that line. A large combination might not. Same rooms and the same outdoor wall, then compare outdoor model, indoor models, pipe routes, drain method and warranty length. A cheap quote that drops a bedroom indoor, or that uses a smaller outdoor than the combination chart allows, is a different system. Ask who commissions the branch boxes or the flare joints, and who registers the warranty. Multi-splits are less forgiving of a casual install than a single short pair.
