Weak airflow means the fan is not delivering air into the room, which is different from air that moves well but is not very cold. On a UK high-wall unit, start with a choked filter, a louvre pointed at the ceiling, sleep or quiet fan speed, and furniture against the intake. Wash the filters, set a higher fan speed, and open the vane. If a cassette or ducted unit is weak, look for a blocked return grille before you assume the fan has failed. If airflow stays poor on high after a clean filter, or the fan rattles, stop and call an F-gas engineer. Do not open the gas circuit to chase a breeze.

A feeble draught is not the same as a cool one
Put a hand in the airstream. A strong draught that is only slightly cool is a capacity or mode question. A feeble draught on high fan is an airflow question. People mix them up and ask for refrigerant when the mesh is solid with pet hair. Undersizing feels like a decent breeze that never wins against the sun. A choked filter feels like the fan can barely push.
Curtains, pelmets and a wardrobe on the return
UK bedroom installs often sit above a curtain pole. The curtain is sucked onto the intake or the discharge blows into the pelmet and never reaches the bed. A wardrobe hard against a return does the same thing. Look at the path before you look at the badge. Say whether the system is a high-wall split, a cassette or ducted, because the access is different. HSE ventilation guidance is relevant when the return path itself is blocked. Gas charge does not unblock a filter.
High fan, an open vane, then stop
Wash and fully dry the filters. Set the fan to high, not quiet or sleep. Turn swing on long enough to see the louvre move. A vane stuck nearly shut feels like a failed fan. Do not bend it with pliers. If it does not move, that is its own fault, not a cue to remove the motor. Do not run with the filter door open to get more air. If high speed is still weak, the blower, the coil or a blockage inside the unit needs an engineer. GOV.UK certification and F-gas rules both point at a certified company once the indoor unit has to come apart. Do not increase the breaker, do not hot-wire the fan, and do not add refrigerant because the room feels still. If the outdoor unit is also silent, treat that as a separate start-up fault and leave electrics covered.
Frequently asked questions
Does weak airflow mean the unit is too small?
Not if the stream itself is feeble. Undersizing feels like a decent breeze that never wins against the sun. A choked filter feels like the fan can barely push. Clean the filter before you judge size.
Will taking the filter out give me more air for a party?
It will blow dust onto a wet coil and then airflow gets worse. Leave the filters in. Use a higher fan speed.
The louvre moves but air is still weak. What next?
Stop after one filter clean and a high-fan test. Book an F-gas engineer if it stays weak. Do not open the blower housing.
Could a painted-over cassette return be the blockage?
Yes. On ducted systems, check that a return in the hall is not covered by a rug or a new bulkhead. A cassette return painted over during a ceiling refresh starves the fan the same way. Replace a disposable filter if the manual says it is disposable.
Can ice make the airflow collapse?
Ice on the coil will choke air. Melt it on fan-only and do not start cooling again until you know why it froze. Call an F-gas engineer if the fan is noisy, slow, or dead, if airflow collapses again within days of a clean filter, or if weak air arrives with ice or water. A collapsed fan capacitor or a packed coil is not a homeowner strip-down.
