Trickle vents are background ventilation. An open vent lets hot air in and cooled air out, so the split works against a leak. That is a comfort limit to size for, not a reason to tape, foam or remove vents the room needs. Leave required ventilators as the window and ventilation design set them. A reverse-cycle split still only treats the room it is in. F-gas installation and, in England, Planning Portal checks on the outdoor unit still apply.
An open window slot as part of the load
A trickle vent is a controlled slot in the window frame. When it is open, outdoor air enters and room air leaves. On a hot day that outdoor air is the load you just paid to remove. The indoor unit can still hold a reasonable setpoint. It will run longer than it would in a shut box. Say so at survey. Photos of the vent positions tell the installer the room is not sealed.
Background ventilators are part of how the home meets its ventilation needs, often under Approved Document F when the windows were specified. Some vents have a shutter the occupant can close for a while. Permanent tape, filler, or a removed vent is a different act. It starves the room of the air the design counted on, and it can push moisture and pollutants somewhere else. The air conditioner recirculates. It does not become the ventilator.
Throw along the room, return off the incoming jet
Throw along the room, and keep the return from sitting in the vent's incoming jet. The outdoor unit does not cure window leakage either. Site it under the Planning Portal conditions in England, with normal clearances, and use an F-gas certified company for the circuit. Keep the setpoint modest so the unit is not fighting July with an 18C target.
Frequently asked questions
Should I tape trickle vents so the air conditioner works better?
No. Required background vents stay. Do not foam them or screw them shut. The split has to be sized with that air change in mind.
Why does the room warm up again near the window?
Open vents and glass gain are a stream of heat. The unit may be holding the middle of the room while the window zone stays warmer. That is the leak, not a reason to block the vent.
Does closing a shutter for an evening break the ventilation?
A shutter designed to close is different from tape or foam. Put the vents back as the design intends. Do not seal them permanently to help a quote.
Will a larger split beat the vents?
Oversizing the split to beat the vents makes short cycling worse in mild weather. Size the room with the vents as they are.
Does blocking a trickle vent turn the split into the house ventilator?
No. A split recirculates. Kitchens and bathrooms still need their extract. If the vents are excessive, draughty, or broken, that is a window question for a competent person, settled before anyone disguises it as an air conditioning upgrade.
Can the indoor unit blow straight out of the nearest trickle vent?
No. That is a short circuit: cold air leaves, the sensor is happy, and the chair is not. Aim the throw along the room.
