A musty smell from a UK wall split is almost always moisture sitting on the indoor coil or in the drain pan, then growing a biofilm while the unit is idle. It is not solved by perfume, essential oils or a plug-in fragrance aimed at the intake. Wash and fully dry the filters, run fan-only to dry the coil if the manual allows it, and check that condensate actually leaves the outdoor spout. If the smell is sweet, oily or like burning, or it returns after a proper dry-out, stop and call an F-gas engineer. Do not open the refrigerant circuit and do not soak the fins in bleach.
A wet-towel smell on the first warm evening
Most British houses run cooling in short bursts: a few hot nights, then months of standby. The indoor coil is cold while the compressor runs, so water condenses on it. When the unit stops, that water should drain outside or to a pump. If the pan is slimy, the drain is slow, or the filters have been left in since the last heatwave, the first start of the next warm spell smells of wet towels.
Closed windows, drying laundry in the same room, and a shower without an extract fan all raise the moisture the coil sees. HSE ventilation guidance is about that stale, wet room air, not about scenting it. The smell is strongest in the first minute of fan start, then it may fade. That pattern points at the indoor wet side, not at the outdoor condenser.
Wash the mesh, then dry the coil on fan-only
Switch the unit off at the remote. Open the filter door the manual shows, slide the mesh filters out, and wash them in lukewarm water. Let them dry completely before they go back. A damp filter put straight back keeps the smell. Vacuum the area around the intake with a brush nozzle. Do not push the nozzle into the aluminium fins.
If the manual has a fan-only or blow mode, run that for half an hour to an hour with the setpoint irrelevant and the room door open a little. Cooling mode keeps making water. Fan-only is the drying step. Leave cooling off until the coil has dried. Walk outside and see whether the condensate pipe or spout is dripping while the unit has been cooling. A dry spout on a humid day means the water is going somewhere else, often back into the room or into the pan. Note whether the drain leaves by gravity through the wall or by a pump, if you know.
Sprays and bleach stay out of the intake
Perfume, a scented candle or essential oil only masks standing moisture and can leave a film on the coil and filters. The afternoon job is the wash and the dry-out, not a fragrance.
- Do not spray air freshener, essential oil or vinegar into the intake.
- Do not pour bleach or supermarket coil cleaner through the fins.
- Do not remove the whole fascia if the manual does not show that as a user step.
- Do not climb the outdoor unit to sniff the fan.
A sweet or oily note is not a damp filter
Stop if the odour is sweet, solvent-like or oily. That can be compressor oil carried with refrigerant, and it is not a filter problem. Refrigerant itself is not a damp-cupboard smell. Stop if you smell burning or hot plastic at the same time. Isolate the unit if you can do that at the rotary isolator without opening any cover, and do not restart it.
Water staining the wall, or slime you cannot reach, belongs with the same stop. Coil and drain cleaning beyond the filters is a service visit.
Stop if the cupboard smell is back the next day
Call an engineer who is certified for F-gas work, the standard GOV.UK sets out for companies handling refrigerant, if the musty smell returns within a day of a clean, dry filter and a fan-only dry-out, or if cooling has become weak. Nobody should open the gas circuit because a room smells damp. If the smell comes with water on the floor, switch off and do not keep running it.
